Which WoW Forever ruleset should you pick? What each one locks in before you create a character
Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Hardcore: what Blizzard says each WoW Forever ruleset changes, which choices you cannot undo, how the PvP one-faction rule and the language setting work.

The quick answer
A ruleset replaces the realm choice, and you cannot freely move between rulesets: to play under another one you create a new character there. The one transfer Blizzard describes is a dead Hardcore character, which can move to another ruleset. Only players in the same ruleset can group, run dungeons and raid together. On the PvP ruleset you can create characters for one faction only; Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore allow both. Hardcore arrives after launch.

World of Warcraft: Forever has no realm list. Blizzard’s ruleset post says you choose the kind of experience first, and that each ruleset works more like a broad player ecosystem than a single realm. Our ruleset overview explains the system. This guide is for the moment you have to pick one, and lists what the choice fixes for that character.
The rulesets
| Ruleset | What Blizzard says it is for | Both factions? |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | The baseline experience: exploration, questing, cooperation, and PvP when you choose to engage in it | Yes |
| PvP | Every trip into contested territory carries more danger and open-world conflict | No, one faction only |
| Roleplaying | Leaning into the fantasy of Azeroth, with like-minded players | Yes |
| Hardcore | The ultimate challenge, where death has lasting consequences | Yes |
| Roleplay-PvP | Blizzard’s post names it but gives no description | Not published |
Hardcore is not part of the launch: Blizzard says it will be available sometime after launch. The post’s opening note says the Roleplay-PvP ruleset is arriving with launch on November 4, and that Blizzard plans to offer it during Early Name Reservation, which begins on Tuesday, October 27. The post says nothing more about how it differs from the others. Our Roleplay-PvP news article tracks that.

What the choice locks in
- Grouping. You can group, run dungeons and raid with players who chose the same ruleset. Cross-ruleset grouping is not supported.
- Factions. Horde and Alliance still cannot group, whatever the ruleset.
- Battlegrounds. They may include players from other rulesets. Hardcore is the exception and stays separate.
- Switching. You cannot hop between rulesets. To play under a different one, create a new character in it.
- PvP faction lock. Once you create an Alliance character on the PvP ruleset, you cannot create a Horde character there, and the other way round. Blizzard ties this to faction balance on that ruleset and compares it to the approach in Season of Discovery, where new character creation could be limited for a faction that needed balance support.
If you want to play both factions, Blizzard’s post allows it on Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore.
What carries over between rulesets
Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets. Hardcore is the exception: what you earn there can become available elsewhere, but progress from other rulesets does not flow back into it, and a Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP. The ruleset overview covers that in more detail.
Setting your language preference
Rulesets are one half of how you find people. The other half is language: Blizzard says you can choose a language preference and meet others who share it. To set it:
- Press Escape to open the Game Menu and choose Options.
- Under System, select Languages and Social.
- Choose your language under “Preferred Online Language”.
This is an account-wide setting that applies to all characters. After you change it, there is a 24-hour cooldown before you can change it again.

If you are reserving names on October 27
Reserving a name means choosing your ruleset and creating the character, so decide before you start. Our name reservation guide covers who can reserve and the regional start times.
What is still unpublished
Blizzard does not publish how many players each ruleset will have or how queues will compare. It states the grouping limit as “cross-ruleset grouping is not supported” and names no workaround for friends who picked different rulesets. The post gives no date for Hardcore and does not explain how Roleplay-PvP differs from PvP and Roleplaying. Details can change before launch.
